He won a record 10 World Series titles as a player \u2013 but he is also remembered for his unique way with words.<\/p><p>His so-called \u201cYogi-isms\u201d include such gems as<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b9608a elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"3b9608a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\">\r\n  <p>\"Ninety per cent of baseball is mental; the other half is physical\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8497728 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8497728\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>and<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56e2399 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"56e2399\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large\">\r\n  <p>\u201cAlways go to other people\u2019s funerals \u2013 otherwise, they won\u2019t go to yours\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85d94c9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"85d94c9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e53bbe5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e53bbe5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But such is the law of averages, one of his Yogi-isms actually made a lot of business sense: \u201cIt was impossible to get a conversation going: everybody was talking too much.\u201d<\/p><p>This is something we tackle in our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/accentbusiness.pl\/program\/crucial-conversations\/\"><strong><em>Crucial Conversations<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0course. Imagine you\u2019re on a train. The driver is your team leader or CEO, and he\u2019s taking the train full speed towards a collapsing bridge. Pointing this out would be a good idea, right? But the chat in the team meeting is revolving around \u201cWhat lovely countryside we\u2019re passing through!\u201d, \u201cHave you seen the delicious items on the menu?\u201d, and \u201cMy my, aren\u2019t we going fast?\u201d No one is bringing up the really important topic \u2013 we\u2019re about to plunge into a canyon.<\/p><p>On a less potentially lethal note, how often have you sat through a 1-hour meeting and thought \u201cWell, what now\u201d? People spend the meeting talking \u2013 but not really saying much. You leave the meeting unsure of the next steps \u2013 what are you expected to do? There were a couple of moments where you were about to raise your hand and ask a question but you were scared of provoking conflict.<\/p><p>Neither of these scenarios fits the definition of a \u201ccrucial conversation\u201d: a spoken exchange of ideas, feelings, thoughts, and\/or opinions that are extremely significant or important to the resolution of a crisis or for making an appropriate decision.<\/p><p>In her book \u201cRadical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity\u201d, former Google exec Kim Scott advocates breaking the old habit of disguising our true feelings with meaningless conversation and instead expressing ourselves with extreme frankness and sincerity. Her advice revolves around Caring Personally (building strong relationships by \u201cnot leaving your humanity at home when you go to work\u201d \u2013 a mantra that probably made more sense before lockdown and virtual offices) and Challenging Directly (challenging mindsets and sharing your opinions openly). All a far cry from \u201cEveryone was talking so much that we couldn\u2019t have a real conversation\u201d.<\/p><p>Challenging often means you might, in the words of business management author Patrick Lencioni, \u201center the danger\u201d: encounter one of those stressful moments when you\u2019re afraid to say something. But it\u2019s exactly at those moments that you need to step in and say something: \u201cHey guys \u2013 the train is heading straight for a canyon.\u201d It is a risky thing to do. If the issue is sensitive and you are presenting an opposing opinion, then it is possible that you will evoke strong emotions. But at that moment, if you remain silent, you are being dishonest\u2014either with the other people in the room (regarding your feelings and thoughts) or with yourself\u2026 or both.<\/p><p>Finding yourself in a crucial conversation can be worrying \u2013 how do you handle it? A useful tip is to bear 3 questions in mind: What do I really want for myself? What do I really want for others? And what do I really want for the relationship? Taking a moment to focus on these questions can help you re-align the conversation towards those things that are\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0important. And you\u2019d keep people like Yogi happy.<\/p><p>Speaking of the great man, let\u2019s close with a few more Yogi-isms that perhaps don\u2019t make as much sense\u2026<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8459c57 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8459c57\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d70333 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d70333\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>\u201cIt\u2019s deja-vu all over again.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cYou can observe a lot by watching.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cI really didn\u2019t say everything I said.\u201d<\/li><li>(On why he no longer went to Rigazzi\u2019s, a St. Louis restaurant): \u201cNobody goes there anymore. It\u2019s too crowded.\u201d<\/li><li>(Giving directions to his New Jersey home): \u201cWhen you come to a fork in the road, take it.\u201d<\/li><li>(After a pitch invasion by multiple streakers): \u201cI don\u2019t know if they were men or women.
