It would be better to talk about what joins us, i.e., how we develop as people\u2026and how to help our team members develop themselves to be better employees.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW115717195 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">Currently, we hear a lot about \u201cGen Z\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW109938659 BCX8\">or<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> Zoomers. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">\u201cThey\u2019re lazy<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">,\u201d \u201cThey <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">don\u2019t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> want to work,\u201d \u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">They\u2019re<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> unfocused,\u201d etc.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> Sounds like the same things we heard about Millennials <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">in the 2010s. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">Funny\u2026sounds like the same things I heard about Gen X<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">Xers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> back in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW109938659 BCX8\">late<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\"> 1990s and early 2000s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW109938659 BCX8\">. If we talk about a particular ethnic group that way, it would be called \u201cracism.\u201d So, if racism is bad, shouldn\u2019t \u201cgenerationism\u201d be bad, too?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The world is changing, and those changes are taking place in time\u2026<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the time. So there is a continuum of change and there are events that affect groups of people differently. Rock-n-Roll affected early Boomers (born 1946\u20131955) differently than late Boomers (born 1955\u20131964). The invention of the atomic bomb also affected early and late Boomers differently.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36db837 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"36db837\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4eafaeb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4eafaeb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parenting evolved through most of the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Century, beginning with the Great Generation (born 1901\u20131927) all the way through to Gen Alpha (born ~2010\u2013????). Some parenting issues are culturally influenced. Some parenting issues are influenced by child psychologists who wrote books and influenced parents through the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Century (e.g. Dr. Benjamin Spock or Dr. James Dobson).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Just like general cultural events or technological advancements, parenting has had a huge impact on each of the generations of the last 120 years. If for no other reason, than when (and to what extent) parents allow their children access to the new technology. For example, Steve Jobs didn\u2019t allow his children to use an iPad because of the negative effects of the technology on people (being very addictive). In his book <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Shallows<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Nicholas Carr talks about the damaging effects of using the Internet and hyperlink technology on thinking and focus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f46ec71 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f46ec71\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div about our employees<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">?<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\"> How about<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">\u2026<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">as human beings\u2014who are growing and developing?<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\"> If we stop thinking about employees vertically as generations, but <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">rather <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">horizontally<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\"> as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">people who are <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">the road to development<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">, then we can shift our focus <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">from categorizing them to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">helping them grow.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\"> We can take them where they are and help them move forward to where they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">want to be and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">need to be<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\"> (in terms of doing their work)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50178562 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW50178562 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a1de5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" areas <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW2154158 BCX8\">they focus on:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-610251e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"610251e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\">governance<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\"> requirements<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\">, etc.)<\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\">And these are the 4 primary areas <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50804536 BCX8\">that people develop in. Though our development is linear, we can end up with a person who is physically 30 years old, intellectually 40 years old, emotionally 16 years old, socially 20 years old, and morally\/ethically 10 years old (or 50 years old). The development is linear\u2026but not necessarily uniform.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And these levels of development can be completely independent of which generation you are in.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, maybe it\u2019s time we start looking for tools to help us understand where people are on each of these 4 continuums and for ways of helping them develop to the next level.
