It’s<\/span>\u00a0already the end of 2025<\/span><\/strong>.<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>

If we\u00a0<\/span>believed<\/span>\u00a0the \u201ctrends\u201d of the 1960s, then by 1999, we should have had an international, functional moon base. Or at least by 2001, the US and Russia should have had operational moon bases<\/span>\u00a0(note the plural). And the reality is that no\u00a0<\/span>person<\/span>\u00a0has set foot on the moon for more than 50 years.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Closer to home,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0gone through\u00a0RPA,\u00a0then we had ESG, and then\u00a0there was\u00a0DEI.\u00a0All of\u00a0these initiatives have something in common\u2014they\u00a0require\u00a0people and are about people. They require people to drive them and make them work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And that brings us to today\u00a0and the world of AI. In the early 1990s,\u00a0as PCs were becoming popular in Poland,\u00a0many managers and company leaders thought, \u201cAh! Now we have a computer\u2026that will fix everything.\u201d\u00a0But computers are only as good as the people\u00a0using\u00a0them. Again\u2026it\u2019s\u00a0people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Reading the headlines about AI\u00a0is\u00a0like\u00a0\u201cd\u00e9j\u00e0 vu all over again\u201d.\u00a0\u201cAI will solve all our problems!\u201d I was on\u00a0a webinar\u00a0back in the spring\u00a0of this year (2025), and someone said that AI psychologists\/therapists were\u00a0now an integral part of\u00a0the\u00a0mental health\u00a0industry.\u00a0Yet\u00a0we\u00a0now\u00a0have data that shows using AI as a therapist can be life-threatening.\u00a0Who\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0heard of \u201cAI hallucinations\u201d?\u00a0And reports\u00a0generated\u00a0by\u00a0AI need to be vetted\u2026by whom?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Over the last\u00a070 years, what we have\u00a0discovered\u00a0time and time again\u00a0is that machines are useful tools (or\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0be useful tools).\u00a0But just like flint knives or plows or\u00a0hydraulic presses, they require people to run them.\u00a0And that brings me to the next \u201ctrend\u201d\u2026leadership development.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I stopped counting the number of articles (and the number of years I\u2019ve <\/span>seen<\/span><\/i><\/b> these articles) that say, \u201cWe have come to a time where we need to re-think leadership\u201d or \u201cThis means that we have to fundamentally change the way we lead.\u201d And then proceed to write an article about the same leadership principles that I was taught 40 years ago! And if we can trust the literature, it\u2019s the same principles for the last 300 years (or, in some circles, 2000+ years).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And here are some key points regarding leadership:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

  • Focus\u00a0on\u00a0people and\u00a0on\u00a0developing people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Have\u00a0a\u00a0vision\u00a0you believe in and\u00a0work to\u00a0make it happen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Communicate your vision clearly, so others can join.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Learn to differentiate strategic issues from tactical and operational issues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    Being a leader is like being a parent. What is a successful parent?\u00a0The primary job of a parent is to raise children who are responsible and accountable, who can take care of themselves, are life-long learners, and\u00a0can get into a relationship with another person\u2026to raise children who are responsible, etc.\u00a0Society and culture can\u00a0<\/span>only<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0function in this manner.\u00a0If this process breaks down, then society ceases to exist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    So, the primary job of a leader is to develop responsible and accountable employees, who can do their jobs (and support others in doing theirs), are life-long learners, and are able to\u00a0develop responsible and accountable employees, who can do their jobs,\u00a0etc\u2026.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    In the 1990s, there was a leadership collapse in the West.\u00a0There were people\u00a0who\u00a0had become CEOs of large corporations\u00a0in the\u00a01960s and 1970s\u00a0and made those companies successful.\u00a0But very few of them invested\u00a0the time\u00a0and energy into making new leaders. When they were ready\u00a0for retirement, they looked\u00a0around\u00a0at the people\u00a0immediately\u00a0below them in the\u00a0organization but\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0see anyone\u00a0to take\u00a0on the mantle and lead the organization.\u00a0They had failed to\u00a0reproduce\u00a0themselves\u2026to make disciples who would take over after they had left.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    As a result, they turned to\u00a0very young\u00a0people, 25\u201330 years old\u00a0and promoted them to senior VPs and groomed them to take over the organization.\u00a0The result?\u00a0A group of\u00a0CEOs\u00a0who\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know how to work with people, treated people as \u201cresources,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0maximized profit and\u00a0\u201cshareholder value\u201d over long-term strategic success\u00a0and employee development. To be fair,\u00a0that\u2019s how people think at that age\u00a0(25-35), and\u00a0as they matured,\u00a0they came\u00a0to understand the\u00a0real issues\u00a0of\u00a0people and strategy, but at what cost?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    Out of this chaos, the value of \u201cservant leadership\u201d\u00a0became\u00a0apparent.\u00a0Servant Leadership, popularized in the 1970s,\u00a0became the\u00a0buzzword for the\u00a0late 1990s and\u00a02000s\u00a0as these young CEOs\u00a0(now more mature CEOs)\u00a0rediscovered\u00a0the value of age and wisdom.\u00a0Yet, anecdotal evidence suggests that we are going to repeat this cycle\u2026.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    So, we know what\u00a0<\/span>skills<\/span><\/i>\u00a0our leaders need. Do we have a\u00a0<\/span>map<\/span><\/i>\u00a0for developing them?\u00a0For the last several years, the American Chamber of Commerce have been running a program, \u201c30 under 30\u201d for young, up-and-coming managers and leaders of American companies.\u00a0Something we discovered is that the skills of leaders and\u00a0the skills of followers\u00a0are\u00a0largely the\u00a0same.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    So, here\u2019s a \u201c<\/span>new<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u201d\u00a0map\u00a0for leadership development:<\/span>\u00a0
    \u00a0\u00a0 \u2013 New Joiner (develop Followership skills)<\/span>\u00a0
    \u00a0\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0Team Leader (develop basic People Skills and Critical Thinking Skills)<\/span>\u00a0
    \u00a0\u00a0 \u2013 Manager (develop advanced People Skills and Problem Solving Skills)<\/span>\u00a0
    \u00a0\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0Young Leaders (develop Strategic Thinking Skills)<\/span>\u00a0
    And in all of these\u00a0is the need to\u00a0develop the communication skills needed\u00a0to\u00a0understand others better.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    And so here we are.\u00a0Is it a trend? Is it a fad?\u00a0AI, hybrid working, or whatever the \u201cnew\u201d thing is.\u00a0Whatever\u00a0comes in the future, there is something that is\u00a0pretty certain, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not a trend or a fad\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0been the constant of human\u00a0achievement for as long as there has been history.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    We need to develop\u00a0our\u00a0people.\u00a0We need to learn to communicate effectively.\u00a0We need to learn to solve problems, analyze data and\u00a0draw conclusions,\u00a0listen to understand rather than reply, and think critically about what we learn and hear.\u00a0And we need to learn to follow before we lead others\u2014because even leaders have\u00a0role\u00a0models\u00a0they follow.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
