It is a laziness of language, and that laziness of language relates to \u201cteaching,\u201d which is conflated with \u201ctraining,\u201d \u201clearning,\u201d \u201csharing,\u201d \u201cpresenting,\u201d and \u201cdevelopment.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The specific issue\u00a0addressed\u00a0in this article\u00a0is the word \u201ctraining.\u201d We have \u201ctraining\u201d on\u00a0\u201cHard Skills,\u201d such as programming, financial software, and manufacturing processes.\u00a0We also have training\u00a0in\u00a0Professional\u00a0Skills,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which are meant\u00a0to equip employees with skills that focus on interpersonal interactions\u2014communication, delegation, feedback, etc. Also, in this bucket are such skills as critical thinking and problem-solving.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More and more\u00a0people are writing about (and talking about) the fact that, just because you went to a training on how to give feedback,\u00a0it\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0necessarily mean you are now able to give meaningful feedback.\u00a0Or you go to\u00a0a training\u00a0on negotiations, but you still struggle to get the outcomes you want.\u00a0Why is that?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">Part of the confusion is in the term \u201ctraining\u201d itself. According to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW231243856 BCX8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW231243856 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">TheFreeDictionary<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">, the term \u201ctraining\u201d is defined as, \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">process<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">bringing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">person,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">So, if\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">we\u2019re<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0training dogs, the standards of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">proficiency<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0are clear: \u201cCome!\u201d \u201cGo!\u201d \u201cSit!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u201cS<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">tay<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">!\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">\u201cN<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231243856 BCX8\">o<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun running meetings? Or even more to the point, the standards for delegating (tasks, projects, processes), thinking critically, being proactive, or defining strategy?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yes, these are skills and yes, we can help people learn these skills. But what would the \u201ctraining\u201d look like? Can you even \u201ctrain\u201d these skills. Is it not more of a process?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In most activities, we can break down the activity into sub-elements and practice these. Some examples include scales and arpeggios in music, dribbling and shooting in basketball, dribbling and shooting in soccer, etc. But what about human interactions? What are the activities? How can we break them down? And how can we even comprehend all of the disparate elements that each of these activities comprises?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW235007151 BCX8\">In order to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\">\u00a0\u201ctrain\u201d in these areas, we need 2 things:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW235007151 BCX8\"><span class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><br class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\" \/><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\">1. We need the agreed upon standards that apply to everyone, and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW235007151 BCX8\"><span class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><br class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\" \/><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\">2. We need to break down the activities into repeatable, executable tasks that can be trained.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"LineBreakBlob BlobObject DragDrop SCXW235007151 BCX8\"><span class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><br class=\"SCXW235007151 BCX8\" \/><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235007151 BCX8\">\u201cAye, there\u2019s the rub!\u201d Neither of those 2 things exist. There are some activities that are \u201cout of bounds,\u201d but there are no universal standards everyone is held to. And since there are no universal standards, there is no way to break them down to develop real training programs. So, what to do?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW235007151 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\">Part of the answer can be found in the title of the management book by Max DePree, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\">Leadership is an Art<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW18139916 BCX8\">Just as we can practice scales and arpeggios to improve our technical skills, it takes something \u201cmore\u201d to develop our skills as a musician. We train our children in certain skills: brushing their teeth, tying their shoes, cleaning their room, etc. At the same time, we need to develop skills like sympathy\/empathy, sharing, helpfulness, kindness, etc. Many (most? all?) of these skills are \u201ccaught\u201d not taught. The old adage \u201cdo what I say, not what I do\u201d is key here. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I worked with children\u2019s workers years ago, I drove\u00a0home\u00a0this idea of \u201ccaught, not taught\u201d\u00a0with these 3 questions:<\/span>\u00a0<br \/><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 \u2013 How many of you have some\u00a0behavior\u00a0that you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0like?<\/span>\u00a0<br \/><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 \u2013 How many of you have children?<\/span>\u00a0<br \/><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 \u2013 How many of you see in your children those\u00a0behaviors\u00a0you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0like?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everybody raises their hands for Question 1. Those who have children raise\u00a0their hands for Question 2. And\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everyone<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who has children raises their hands for Question 3. Children watch us and see what we are doing\u2014they imitate us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here\u2019s\u00a0the catch: employees do the same thing. Every company has values. But those values are only meaningful if leadership follows them\u2014if their actions follow their words.
