Learning is an investment\u2026that pays big returns.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

It is sometimes difficult to sell investment in L&D because the ROI is often measured in \u201cblue money,\u201d rather than \u201cgreen money.\u201d Many \u201cseeds\u201d do not bring a return\u2026but the seeds that do bring a return, give a large return. And learning is always a valuable thing\u2026.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Steve Jobs gave a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005. One of his key points was \u201cConnecting the dots.\u201d The story he told was of how he \u201cjust did stuff that was interesting,\u201d and later, when he looked back on his life, he could see how those came together to put him in the place where he was.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Another example is Richard Feynman. Feynman made it a point to learn in many widely different areas, such as painting composition and particle physics,\u00a0<\/span>music<\/span>\u00a0and quantum mechanics. Many of his contributions (including those that won him the Nobel Prize) were the result of connecting\u00a0<\/span>very different<\/span>\u00a0ideas.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0number 1 most\u00a0important factor\u00a0CEOs and world-famous leaders mention as a part of the source of their success is \u201clearning.\u201d They are all avid readers and learners. In fact, one of the core characteristics of leaders has been defined as \u201clife-time learners.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The value of learning is that it can pay off many, many years later.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

During a recent training session with Financial Planning & Analysis professionals, we explored how to effectively communicate insurance risk in a merger and acquisition (M&A) process. Someone asked me,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWhere did you learn all of this?\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

It came from years of hands-on experience. Working with start-up teams across Central and Eastern Europe, contributing to IT operations at a global printing company, and managing\u00a0logistics\u00a0within a major packaging manufacturer. It was knowledge built gradually, through\u00a0real challenges\u00a0and real consequences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Over the years,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0learned how to engage in meaningful conversations with business and industry leaders. I understand the bigger\u00a0picture\u00a0geopolitics, corporate strategy, and organizational development while also recognizing the everyday challenges professionals face inside organizations.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There are many moving parts and navigating them\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0easy. Having experienced this myself, I bring empathy into my work and training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I\u2019ve managed teams, built organizations, and worked closely with employees and clients. My advice comes partly from hands-on experience and partly from the insights and lessons shared by others. And these were things I <\/span>learned.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My sister started as a legal secretary at a large U.S. law firm.\u00a0Within weeks, she was assigned to a \u201cbaby lawyer\u201d just beginning her career.\u00a0Together, they learned\u00a0about clients, the legal system in the energy industry, and, most importantly, about people: how they think and what matters to them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Over time, they became one of the firm\u2019s \u201cpower teams.\u201d That young lawyer rose to senior partner in record\u00a0time\u00a0the fastest in the firm\u2019s history. Their success was driven by a shared curiosity and relentless learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

They\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0just focus on work. They explored everything:\u00a0industry knowledge, law, clients, but also music, art, and languages. Each of them read 30\u201350 books a year, on top of the hundreds of pages they\u00a0handled\u00a0weekly at work.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

So, if I can encourage to you do anything, \u201cLearn!\u201d Learn about things that interest you and things that\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0interest you. Learn about things related to work and things related to life. Read business books and \u201cliterature<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0Listen to audio books and music (all kinds of music). Learn.\u00a0<\/span>Above all, learn<\/span>\u00a0about people! The return on that investment is greater than you can imagine.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
